Colors in ten areas of the full color spectrum found in our industry were chosen arbitrarily as reference points. Colors differing from these reference colors by one and five units of color difference (AE) as calculated by the Hunter equation were produced for each axis of the Hunter Color Coordinate Space.

The Hunter Color Coordinate Space System of "a" and "b" was originally selected not to give preference to one system over another but because industry surveys indicated that a majority of the Association's members were using the Hunter Color Difference Meter which is based on the system.
